520R Journal2

My grandfather, an old gentleman with white hair and eyebrows, is the person I admire most. He was born in 1925, to a poor family in Hunan, China. He was the only son of a couple of farmers, and he had two younger sisters.
My grandfather had a hard and deprived time when he was young. Because his parents had no money to support him for school, he had to audit outside the classroom quietly, at the same time, he helped with some farm work and looked after his sisters at home.
During World War II, My grandfather left his family and joined the army. Although it was dangerous at that time, he continued study in a little spare time. Finally, he became a headmaster of a high school in the army, and also he taught some officers.
The reason for my grandfather’s success was that he worked hard, and no matter how tough it was, he never lost the faith on studying. It is worthy of my using for reference. I am inspired whenever I remind the hard time of my grandfather. Now we live in a better life that we have a chance to study abroad, the most difficult is to overcome the strangeness both in study and life. Then we can enjoy our study here.

520R Journal1

After two weeks in ELI,I am used to study here gradually. The 520R course begins at 8:10am every Monday to Thursday, which I think quite well because it is easy for me to keep my head in the crisis every morning.

In the 520R course ,I have learned about a lot of skills in reading.Such as how to scan and skim ,which are very important in reading.By skiming,we can know the length of the whole article and the main idea of every paragaph, while work out the details we should scan the article, underline some key words when reading. We also did some speed reading in class, which is quite interesting.I find it useful to speed up in reading that I never exercise like this before. The article in our textbook is a little challenging for me,because it always has too many new words.I have to preview it before class in order to catch up with others.I hope I could improve my reading by doing so.
