Collecting Happiness

Accompanying by the development of society, people now have increased money and higher quality of life, but still they don’t feel happy, or even the factor of happiness becomes lower than before. It seems abnormal, but the fact is so nowadays.

There are so many unsatisfactory things in daily life. Some people complain about their overtime working, some people argue about how to earn more money, and some others don’t like the weather where they live in. No matter whether the life is good or bad, they can still find something that makes them unhappy.

Why does it often appear this kind of situation? It is might be true that the psychological effect plays an important role in it. The more people want to get, the higher the request will become. Once it cannot reach the place they expect, the feeling of unhappiness will appear. It is like an old Chinese saying goes: The higher the climb, the more severe fall.

Therefore, how to be happy is becoming an important problem should be solved first. In my opinion, it is not a big deal. What we should do is just trying to collect the happiness at any time and place. Because all of us are easy to overlook the tiny things around us, which means that we merely focus on the big happiness, and ignore the tiny enjoyment.

Nevertheless, sometimes the tiny happiness is more useful than the big one, since it is easier to be found out in daily life. For instance, studying abroad is a challenge and has a lot of difficulties, but can we enjoy the new life here? Obviously, no one can help us to deal with it, so we should find out tiny happiness and collect them by ourselves. Such as making a new foreign friend, getting to know a local custom, realizing some new words, which are all happiness we should not ignore. Although they are tiny and insignificant sometimes, when looking back of a day, adding all of these together, you will find a big happiness in front of you. How amazing it is!

When you feel upset, don’t complain about others, just looking around, you may find back so much happiness you missed, collecting them then you can get a bigger one.

Read about “Impact of an Aging Population on the Global Economy”

Jeremy J. Siegel, the author of “Impact of an Aging Population on the Global Economy”, is the Russell E. Palmer Professor of Finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He has written and lectured extensively about the economy and financial markets, has appeared frequently on CNN, CNBC, NPR and others networks. Also, he served 15 years as head of economics training at JP Morgan from 1984 through 1998 and is currently the academic director of the U.S. Securities Industry Institute.

In “Impact of an Aging Population on the Global Economy”, Jeremy J. Siegel puts forward the idea that there is a global warming about the developing world’s growing importance and the developed world’s aging population, which are related to each other. He makes a deep research about the long-term demographic trends and the global solution, and points out that the developing countries of the world can solve the problems for the developed world. I agree with some of the author’s opinions, but I doubt some instances of developing countries.

Initially, I don’t think the developing country such as China doesn’t have the same age wave problem as the developed country. Although China has a great number of populations, the most families in China have only one child of each couple. Therefore, in the next few years, one worker should support 2 to 4 retirees at least, which means that the duty of workers in China is not as simple as the author thought.

On the other hand, I don’t agree with the opinion of “transfer of population and GDP”. From this part, the author said the GDP of developing countries will beyond the developed countries’ in the future. In fact, we cannot calculate easily by the number, because the base of developing country is different with the developed countries. The basis of developing countries is so low, they will still stay a low economic lever even if their GDP is high.

In summary, I think the author’s conclusion is too simple, he doesn’t know the enough real situation of the developing world, it may not solve the problem thoroughly.

The difference between academic reading and reading for pleasure

In my opinion, academic reading and reading for pleasure are totally different. The purpose of reading for pleasure is to relax yourself, so you can choose any kinds of article as you like. When having a reading for pleasure, people do not care about its length and vocabulary, but more focus on the scenario or content. As long as they enjoy it, they always blend into the story even forget the time and what is happening around him/her.

However, academic reading more focus on education of special area, so it is always written in a formal way, which makes people feel more strict and boring. The vocabulary of academic reading is much more difficult and particular, so when doing some academic reading, a professional dictionary is necessary. Additionally, academic reading is more complicated, it usually research or debate something.

Actually, I like reading for pleasure because it can give me relax and show me around the different world. Every time I read Harry Potter, I would forget all the things in real life, and enter a magic world. I always think the owl from Hogwarts send the letter to the wrong address that I can not enter the magic school. On the other hand, academic reading can also give us pleasure when the content is related to our study background. If we know something about it, we do not feel bored and can also enjoy it.

I am gloomy!

Now I find that there are a great many difficulties in front of me. Especially in reading, the more I learn, the harder it becomes. Although I like reading, I find the academic reading is really different from those reading for pleasure. The summary and paraphrasing, which I don’t know how to deal with, are big problems for me even in Chinese. Every time I try my best, but the results are always not as good as I expect.
Also, the vocabulary quiz is always upset me. No matter how many times I reviewed, I am still afraid to face it every week. Sometimes I begin to lose confidence, because I usually did so poor on it.
My goodness! I don’t know how to do…:(
